Heritage and History: “Moidart-Newfoundland Connections” a short talk by Margaret Bennett at 7:30pm followed by THE SCOTTISH NEWFOUNDLANDERS’ HOMECOMING CEILIDH with the MacArthur and MacIsaac families
Margaret Bennett is widely regarded as Scotland’s foremost folklorist. She is a singer and broadcaster and recipient of awards for contributions to literature, folklore and culture, and recently received an Honorary Doctorate of Music (Glasgow, 2010), ‘Le Prix du Québec’ (for contributions to Quebec cultural studies, 2011) and was made an Honorary Professor of the Royal Scottish Academy in 2012.
A two-part tour of Dileab Ailean – the Legacy of Allan MacArthur will begin with the original MacArthur family from Newfoundland who visit their ancestral home and bring back traditions that have endured as well as new compositions. They are multi-instrumental, with styles that reflect the ancient and modern and consist of award-winning singers and musicians as well as dancers. In handing on this legacy to Scottish musicians the music and songs will become part of Scotland’s vibrant traditional music repertoire.
