MACMASTER/HAY

Mary Macmaster is one of the world's leading exponents and innovators of the metal-strung clarsach and the fantastic Camac electro-harp. Through her work with Sileas and The Poozies she has been an integral part of the development of Scottish music. Mary has also recorded with, amongst others, Dick Gaughan, Norma Waterson and Kathryn Tickell.

Donald Hay is a drummer/percussionist with an exceptional ability to play with power, empathy, delicacy and drama. Recently he has worked with many top musicians including Jerry Douglas, Aly Bain, Kris Drever, The Unusual Suspects, Eliza Carthy, Nuala Kennedy and Shooglenifty.

In their life as a duo Macmaster/Hay have produced their debut CD ‘ Love and Reason‘, recorded a live session for the BBC’s ‘Late Junction‘ performed at Celtic Connections, The Edinburgh Harp Festival, Lorient Festival Interceltique and toured the Czech Republic, Italy and Australia. A British tour is planned for Autumn 2010.
Sourcing material from ancient Scotland to modern Europe the duo have created a sparkling, cinematic work in ‘ Love and Reason‘ that retains the soul of traditional music whilst allowing it to breathe in a modern environment. From the intricate rhythms of Gaelic waulking song ‘Thograinn Thograinn’ to Robert Burn’s ‘Slave’s Lament’, Sandy Wright’s beautifully observed human tales and the truly amazing ‘Pibroch’, based on MacCrimmon’s ‘Lament for the Children’, this is an album of enormous scope and inspiration.
Both Mary and Donald have recently collaborated with Sting on his new recording ‘If on a Winter’s Night ‘. This includes Mary singing part of ‘Thograinn Thograinn’ intertwined with Sting’s interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem ‘Christmas at Sea’. Mary performed several concerts with Sting at the end of 2009 and can be seen on his live DVD from Durham Cathedral.
Their elegant and emotional live show conjures up visions of a beautiful yet dangerous Scottish landscape. An up-lifting, magical experience.

Following the launch of her new album Reckless Angels SHARON KING will be taking her songs on tour with the trio The Reckless Angels, Sharon King with guitar, vocals & songwriting, Laura Beth Salter on mandolin and vocals and Nicola McAteer on cello.
A spinner of confessional tales and a troubadour in the truest sense, King excels as a live performer. ‘…her voice is an alluring and fresh blend of country and folk styling’s which possess considerable reserves of strength…’ (Rock n Reel). Supported by her hypnotic, rock steady acoustic guitar, her endearingly candid dry humour creates a relaxed intimacy with the crowd.
