SCOTTISH REFERENDUM DEBATE

In the run up to the Referendum on Scottish Independence (to be held on 18th September), Glenuig Hall and the Sunart Centre in Strontian are delighted to host debates between two well-known local advocates of both the YES and NO campaigns. Former MSP Jim Mather and businessman Angus MacDonald will be putting the cases for and against a yes vote and responding to points and queries from the audience.

Jim Mather, whose parents came from Mull & Fort William, is a CA & businessman who became a politician as a result of work he did in making an Economic Case that persuaded many people that Scotland’s relatively low growth, lower living standards and other issues were largely due to a lack of economic power.

Jim sees the Referendum as being like an Employee Buy Out ballot, where the people of Scotland have the chance to make Scotland, its constituent parts and themselves all that they can be. As an MSP for the Highlands & Islands, he focused on how meaningful local recovery can be achieved and how independence can consolidate and augment the fulfilment of that goal.

Angus MacDonald, from an old Lochaber family, is a businessman that believes that the Union has served us well and that Scotland is a huge beneficiary of being part of Great Britain. He says ‘while the emotional attraction of Independence appeals, it is clear to me it would be a foolish and expensive route for us to pursue’

MacDonald has always lived in the highlands and has built a number of large international businesses. His passion is the people of the highlands. He was awarded an OBE for founding the Caledonian Challenge which has raised £15m for rural Scottish causes and set up the Moidart Trust to encourage business growth on the west coast.

The debates will be held in Glenuig Hall on Monday 25th August and in the Sunart Centre, Strontian, on Tuesday 26th August. Both events start at 7:00pm, and admission is free.
